Background of Works

Technology and introduction of new mediums, coupled with advances in the field of science and digital technology have been a major theme throughout my career with the focus on post modernism and the influences of culture and feminism at the start of my career; this is evident in early works published on my website www.maryhadaconcept.com under catalogue and previous catalogues.

I initially published a body of work depicting the degeneration of the physical body of a priest in the Anglican community during the various stages of cancer; this can be seen in the Stations of the Cross which has its cultural roots in the Christian community and coupled this with the MRI scans of the brain presenting the reality of the affliction, thus contrasting the “old ways” with the current clinical science depicting the affliction.

A newer body of work focused again on cultural stigmas associated with the role of women in society throughout the ages in Europe, the Middle and Far East and how vanity has not changed only the method of disfigurement has evolved through the advances in cosmetic and plastic surgery in more recent times.

More recent works comment on the irony of how the world has changed through technology and satellites where previously a person’s travels were catalogued through the postcards received or sent from various places, now Google earth can target a person to within 5 metres of their location anywhere on earth.

In many ways the major theme and ideas incorporated in many of my works are shaped by the advancement in technology and its juxtaposition or corroboration of cultural heritage and ideas of the past in a postmodern society today.

My ideas while predominantly conceptual as a visual artist I try to portray, comment and draw comment on current and sometimes contentious topics relevant today.
